Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the State where the applicant resides and must be insurable as defined in the UT System UTS 157, as applicable to the performance of essential duties and responsibilities of the position.

Purpose of Position

Performs highly complex (senior-level) elevator maintenance work such as assemble, install, repair, and/or maintain electric or hydraulic freight or passenger elevators, or dumbwaiters . Performs complex elevator control trouble-shooting on mechanical and electrical elevator systems. Applies quality control measures that assure that all preventive maintenance is completed in a professional, efficient and timely manner. Supervises projects, repairs and personnel. Prepares and conducts annual and 5-year safety tests on elevator systems.

Essential Functions

Implements programs to assure all UTEP elevators pass annual and other state inspections. Checks and assures quality control that safety regulations and building codes are met, and completes service reports verifying conformance to standards.

Adjusts safety controls, counterweights , door mechanisms, and components such as valves, ratchets, seals, and brake linings.

Assembles electrically powered stairs, steel frameworks, and tracks, and installs associated motors and electrical wiring. Assembles elevator cars, installing each car's platform, walls, and doors. Assembles, installs, repairs, and maintains elevators, escalators, moving sidewalks , and dumbwaiters , using hand and power tools, and testing devices such as test lamps, ammeters , and voltmeters.

Identifies and maintains guide shoes and rollers to minimize the lateral motion of cars as they travel through shafts ; bolts or welds steel rails to the walls of shafts to guide elevators, working from scaffolding or platforms; assists in connecting car frames to counterweights, using steel cables. Connects electrical wiring to control panels and electric motors. Cuts prefabricated sections of framework, rails, and other components to specified dimensions . Operates elevators to determine power demands, and test power consumption to detect overload factors.

Disassembles defective units, and repairs or replaces parts such as locks, gears, cables, and electric wiring. Inspects, trouble shoots, and repairs wiring connections, control panel hookups, door installations, and alignments and clearances of cars and hoist ways to ensure that equipment will operate properly. Installs electrical wires and controls by attaching conduit along shaft walls from floor to floor, then pulling plastic-covered wires through the conduit. Installs outer doors and door frames at elevator entrances on each floor of a structure. Trouble shoots and repairs malfunctions in brakes, motors, switches, and signal and control systems, using test equipment. Tests newly installed equipment to ensure that it meets specifications, such as stopping at floors for set amounts of time.

Maintains log books that detail all repairs and checks performed. Maintains skills up-to-date by attending assigned or designated trainings .

Reads and interprets blueprints to determine the layout of system components, frameworks, and foundations, and to select installation equipment.

Works various schedules and is required to carry a pager and be On-call.

Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems. Complies with all State and University policies.

Other duties may be assigned.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's objectives, policies and applicable laws.

High school diploma or GED.

Five years of experience , related to the statement of duties and responsibilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience . Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs , uses, repair, and maintenance . Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the elevator service industry. Knowledge of relevant equipment , policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions. Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models. Occasional travel may be required.

Possesses a current valid Texas driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

CET Certification and/or IUEC Mechanic card.
