Athletic Field Maintenance Worker, Senior - Substitute Position

ATHLETIC FIELD MAINTENANCE WORKER, SENIOR – SUBSTITUTE POSITION
The following position is available as a substitute or out-of-class assignment at Grossmont College. The assignment is expected to begin in January.

SALARY
CL-29: Step A: $3,767 monthly
For internal employees, the compensation shall be paid at the step of the higher classification which is at least five (5) percent greater than the bargaining unit member's monthly salary, including any longevity increment.

SUMMARY: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of specialized grounds maintenance work in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields, surrounding landscape, facilities and equipment. Perform grounds maintenance duties related to the design, layout, installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems; application of toxic chemicals for pest, insect and weed control. Prepare, measure, mix, and finish cement areas and complete minor construction projects for athletic areas.
EDUCATION: Graduation from high school or equivalent supplemented with additional training in landscape technology or a related field.
EXPERIENCE: Increasingly responsible grounds maintenance experience involving the care and maintenance of athletic fields.

SUMMARY:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of specialized grounds maintenance work in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields, surrounding landscape, facilities and equipment. Perform grounds maintenance duties related to the design, layout, installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems; application of toxic chemicals for pest, insect and weed control. Prepare, measure, mix, and finish cement areas and complete minor construction projects for athletic areas.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform complex grounds maintenance duties in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields, surrounding landscape areas and facilities to maintain an attractive, safe and functional environment that meets established athletic field regulations.
Perform a variety of grounds maintenance duties including preparing and cultivating soil, fertilizing, mowing, edging, trimming, weeding, pruning and other activities.
Mark athletic play areas with appropriate marking materials or equipment to delineate the area of play and restricting lines as prescribed and established by league and sport rules; design and construct new fields as required.
Estimate, prepare, and determine grass soil types for athletic fields and surrounding areas. Determine amount and type of infield soils.
Design, layout, install, maintain and repair irrigation systems to assure proper and safe operating conditions. Replace sprinkler lines, pipes, valves, sprinklers and other related parts as necessary. Dig trenches, install pipe and valves, run irrigation systems to ensure proper ground coverage.
Install, repair, maintain and adjust electrical timers and automatic valves. Schedule run times to reduce run off and provide safe playing surfaces. Plan watering schedules around games, events and classes.
Read, interpret and follow blueprint construction specifications, work orders and diagrams. Make recommendations related to the design of landscape and irrigation systems; document changes as appropriate.
Prepare clay surfaces for pitching and batting areas; drag infield areas and base paths according to established procedures; drag, repair and prepare track in preparation of meets; prepare jumping pits and approaches and repair hurdles for track.
Clean and maintain athletic fields, facilities and related areas including dugouts, bleachers, courts and parking lots; wash down tennis and handball courts.
Inspect fields and irrigation systems for damage, vandalism and related safety issues.
Perform outdoor pest, insect and weed control functions as assigned; identify pests and weeds to be eradicated; select, mix and spray insecticides, pesticides and herbicides; determine appropriate times to spray; follow all applicable laws and regulations associated with outdoor applications.
Determine need for fertilizers, soil amendments and other additives for planted areas according to seasonal requirements, scheduled games and other activities.
Implement regular preventative maintenance program to meet field care needs, athletic standards and to prevent injuries on fields and facilities.
Accountable for proper use and disposal of all chemicals used in grounds maintenance to prevent excess landscape irrigation or chemical runoff to storm drains in accordance with Federal and State laws and regulations.
Confer with coaches, exercise science instructors and others as appropriate to coordinate field maintenance activities.
Confer with external contractors performing work or construction on or around athletic facilities and fields; review blueprints with contractors for irrigation valve and pipe locations. Coordinate contractor activities to prevent interruption of scheduled games, events and classes.
Properly operate a variety of hand tools, equipment and machines including lawn mower, tractor, skip loader, sweeper, edger, nail and screen drag equipment and other grounds maintenance equipment and tools. Maintain tools and equipment in proper working condition; report need for major repairs to supervisor.
Prepare related athletic field areas (dugouts, storage facilities, base anchors, etc.) for cement work as assigned. Perform calculations to determine areas and materials required; mix, pour, and finish cement as related to projects. Perform minor construction projects for the care and maintenance of athletic areas.
Perform minor maintenance and repair work on equipment and facilities; assist with other maintenance work as assigned.
Set up fields and facilities; move equipment, bleachers, nets, scoreboard and audio equipment required for athletic and special events; dismantle and store equipment after event.
Order materials, parts and supplies as required for assigned projects and maintenance duties. Maintain records related to work activities and material safety data sheets.
Provide work direction and guidance to others as assigned.
Maintain departmental area(s) in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assure compliance with established safety procedures and regulations.
Maintain currency of qualifications for area of assignment; actively seek and apply current technical knowledge for assigned projects; complete continuing education hours to meet Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicators Certificate Category B renewal.
May act as lead or supervisor in the absence of the supervisor.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Federal and state laws applicable to outdoor pesticide application such as posting, re-entry time, labeling, and personal protective equipment, proper usage, techniques, and appropriate chemicals for eradication and control.
Methods, equipment and materials used in cultivating and maintaining athletic field areas, including methods, equipment and material used in pest, insect and weed control.
Equipment and procedures to set up and mark athletic fields and boundaries in accordance with NCAA rules and regulations that govern each sport or activity.
Methods, equipment and materials used in specialized grounds maintenance work.
Equipment, tractor and small engine repair and maintenance techniques.
Basic recordkeeping techniques.
Health and safety regulations and procedures in handling hazardous chemicals and equipment used in grounds maintenance work.
Federal, State and local laws and regulations on emergency clean up and disposal of hazardous chemicals used in ground maintenance.
ABILITY TO:
Perform specialized grounds maintenance work in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields, surrounding landscape, facilities and equipment, including application of chemicals for pest, insect and weed control.
Utilize tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance work.
Perform mathematical calculations to estimate, measure, and determine materials required.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Operate heavy and light power and mechanical equipment used in the care and maintenance of athletic fields and tracks.
Lift objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Train and provide work direction to others.
Work independently; meet schedules and timelines.
Operate a personal computer in an effective manner consistent with requirements of the position.
EDUCATION:
Graduation from high school or equivalent supplemented with additional training in landscape technology or a related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Increasingly responsible grounds maintenance experience involving the care and maintenance of athletic fields.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license and ability to qualify for district vehicle insurance coverage; California Department of Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicators Certificate Category B (Landscape Maintenance) and continuing education to maintain certificate renewal.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Outdoor environment; subject to lifting, climbing, stretching, pushing and adverse weather conditions and potentially hazardous chemicals.
