The Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU), through its programs and facilities is a focal point of the campus where students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni and guests develop an enduring connection to the university. As a campus social hub, the SMSU assists in the retention and development of students, while encouraging a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural pluralism, gender equity, and ethnic diversity. We accomplish this by providing a variety of cultural, social, educational and recreational activities, which create an environment conducive to personal growth and development. Planned activities also provide students with leadership opportunities and employment, which promotes an active learning experience as well as relaxation, entertainment, and social interaction. As the meeting place on campus for students and organizations, the facilities provide a comfortable and relaxing environment that embodies the delivery of services important to the university community. As a bridge between formal learning and life experience, co-curricular activities coordinated by the SMSU serve as a training ground for development of student leaders.

Work Schedule

This is a regular, full-time, hourly position. Willingness to work a flexible schedule as necessary in order to respond to emergency/urgent situations is required. This may include working extended hours, evenings, weekends and some holidays.

General Purpose

Under the supervision of the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) Associate Director of Recreation and Wellness Operations, the Maintenance Specialist supports the preventive maintenance of Recreation and Wellness facilities, including plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems, and furnishings. Possesses a strong understanding of fitness equipment maintenance and is eager to learn and adapt to new equipment.

Typical Activities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Inspects, maintains, and repairs plumbing, heating, water and sewer systems.

Develop and oversee a preventive maintenance plan to ensure the efficient operation and longevity of equipment and facilities.

Provides electrical maintenance and repair work; makes repairs to floors and carpeting, furniture repair and performs minor carpentry.

Demonstrates a solid understanding and practical experience in the safe and effective use of heavy-duty tools and equipment, such as power drills, saws, grinders, pneumatic tools, and other industrial-grade machinery, ensuring all tasks are completed efficiently and in compliance with safety regulations.

Maintains and repairs windows, doors, screens, blinds, gutters, and drains; replaces light bulbs and electrical fixtures.

Conduct inspections of facilities and equipment daily. Oversee monthly reports for fire extinguisher and light control that gets sent to facilities.

Performs light cement work, interior and exterior painting, and patching; carries materials and assists with heavy objects, cleaning, and other duties on the interior and exterior of the building.

Provides cost estimates of labor and materials and recommends priorities for requisitioning supplies and materials. Coordinates interaction with contractors and subcontractors to affect repair and maintenance projects.

Assists staff in office and space planning; serves as principal resource for installation of electrical, heating and air conditioning equipment, voice and data lines, carpet, paint, and window coverings. Moves office equipment and provides other maintenance duties as needed.

Provides support to the Associate Director on various projects as needed. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience High School diploma, G.E.D, or equivalent and a minimum of two years' experience, three years preferred, maintaining and repairing facilities and equipment. Familiarity and capability with all types of hand and power tools as well as good working knowledge of all types of hardware, fasteners, adhesives, structural sealants and industrial coatings. Language Skills Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization. Ability to use word processing and spreadsheet software and other related software. Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Computer Skills To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of MS Office, including Excel Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Licenses & Certifications: First Aid and CPR/AED certification required (certifications may be obtained within the first month of employment).
